This year’s event generated the highest amount of donations in the club’s history and will support important community programs in the greater Brockton area
BROCKTON, Mass. – June 23, 2021 – More than 275 golfers teed off for a cause on Tuesday, June 22nd, participating in the Boys & Girls Club of Metro South’s 25th Annual Golf Tournament at Pinehill’s Golf Club in Plymouth hosted by Shields Health Care Group (Shields).
After being canceled last year due to COVID-19, this year’s milestone event broke records and raised $385,000, becoming the organization’s largest fundraiser in its history. The golf tournament is acknowledged as one of the largest single-day fundraisers for Boys & Girls Clubs across the country, thanks to the continued support and collaboration between Shields and the Boys & Girls Club Metro South.
“The Boys & Girls Club of Metro South is an organization close to mine and my family’s heart, and we are proud to have been able to tee off for the 25th tournament,” said Tom Shields Jr., CEO of Shields Health Care Group. “The past year has given all of us a lot of time to think about what is important to us, where our values are, and how important community is. Non-profits need our support now more than ever, and we as business leaders are proud to demonstrate our shared commitment to the important work of the Boys & Girls Club of Metro South. We are grateful to play a role in the tournament’s success and even more grateful to the Boys & Girls Club for their profound impact on our community.”
The Shields family has been a supporter of the Club since its inception and hosts the golf tournament annually in honor of Thomas F. Shields Sr and Mary J. Shields., its late founders, carrying on their legacy of supporting the community. Over the last 25 years, the tournament has raised nearly $3M dollars to fuel the Club’s mission! The Club also announced at the tournament that they will launch a new program this fall in honor of the Shields family’s commitment to the organization. The new Tom & Mary Shields Club Scholars Program will be a college success program that will award a $10,000 college scholarship to one Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South 8th grader each year.
“The Tom & Mary Shields Club Scholars Program has been developed to empower the youth of the Metro South organization to pursue their goals through and beyond college by providing mentorship and access to academic, professional and social opportunities both inside the Club and within their education community,” said Derek Heim, President, and CEO of Boys and Girls Club of Metro South. “We are so thrilled to be able to honor Mr. and Mrs. Shields’ legacy through the establishment of the Club Scholars Program and I look forward to being able to report back at future tournaments on this impact this initiative will undoubtedly have.”
Created in 2019 through merging the Boys & Girls Clubs of Brockton and Taunton, Boys & Girls Club of Metro South provide a positive place for city youth ages six to 18 to attend after-school and summer programs. These programs are particularly crucial for children and families over the last year as the community navigated the COVID-19 pandemic.
