A Clear Look at the MRI Process

Want to know how to prepare for your specific scan?

Every MRI is different, but knowing what to expect helps. Here’s what happens at each stage — from scheduling and preparation, to your exam, contrast (if needed), and results.

  • Self-scheduling: After insurance approval, you’ll receive a link to choose your date, time, and location.
  • Preparing: Complete forms, follow instructions, and remove all metal and valuables before arriving.
  • During the scan: Most exams take 20–40 minutes. You’ll hear noise, but headphones and music are provided for comfort.
  • Contrast: Some exams require IV contrast to highlight specific areas.
  • Results: A radiologist reviews images and shares them with your doctor and patient portal within a few days. Timing may take longer for weekend exams.
