Every PET/CT exam is unique, but knowing what to expect helps. Here’s what happens at each stage — from scheduling and preparation, to your injection, scan, results, and a few simple precautions after your visit.

for your specific scan?

• Scheduling: After your provider orders your PET/CT, a Shields representative will call to pre-register you, review preparation instructions, and confirm your appointment time.
• Fasting & other prep: You’ll receive a reminder before your exam with details specific to your scan type — such as fasting or clothing guidelines.
• Injection: Most PET/CT exams include a small injection of a radioactive tracer. You may rest or leave briefly before your scan, depending on your exam type.
• During the scan: You’ll lie on your back for about 30 minutes while our technologists monitor you. Music is available to help you relax.
• After your scan: You can resume normal activities, but please keep at least 6 feet away from children and pregnant women for several hours.
• Results: A radiologist reviews your images and shares them with your doctor and patient portal within a few days.
