New President for Shields

Tom Shields Jr. assumes leadership of Shields Health Care Group.

Tom Shields Jr., formerly executive vice president of Shields Health Care Group (SHCG), is taking over as President of the Massachusetts-based network of health care facilities. He will succeed his brother, Jack Shields, who announced in January that he would start his own healthcare venture capital and private equity investment company.

“Shields is a family business and change in leadership was always part of the long-term plan.” said Tom Shields Jr. “It’s a privilege to be given the opportunity to lead this exceptional company.”

Tom went on to praise Jack’s tenure as President saying, “Jack has an impressive list of accomplishments, particularly growth. During his time as president we quadrupled in size and established valuable partnerships with some of the top health care providers in the country. As a brother and a business partner, I’m proud of the success he has brought to this company.”

Growth is also at the cornerstone of Tom’s long and successful record running the sales portion of Shields, where he led the New England sports branding strategy and established partnerships between Shields and the Patriots, Revolution, Celtics and Boston Bruins. Tom was unanimously approved for the role of President by the Shields Board of Directors, including Thomas Shields Sr., his father & CEO of SHCG, and his presiding siblings, Jack Shields and Carmel Shields.

“Tom is a terrific choice to lead Shields.” Jack Shields commented. “I am impressed with his leadership and commitment and I have no doubt that the future of Shields is strong and competitive. Shields Health Care Group is a great company – it’s a true American success story and I am proud to have served as its President for 19 years.”

Newly appointed President Tom commented on the current state of Shields. “Shields is thriving. We are the recognized leader in diagnostic imaging in Massachusetts and are well-positioned in a market that is increasingly demanding high-quality, cost-effective care.” He went on to say, “Yes, we are facing a challenging industry and yes, it does affect our business. But Shields is a focused and progressive company and we are committed to constant innovation. We will continue to evolve our business, adding to our technology offerings and leveraging our success. Shields will continue to challenge the ‘status quo’ of care and service in the health care industry; I am extremely encouraged by all that lies ahead of us.”

Though the change was announced to employees in January 2010, Tom became the official President, July 1. Jack Shields will leave SHCG after 23 years to pursue his longstanding goal of starting his own healthcare venture capital and private equity investment company, JShields Capital Group. The company will actively seek to invest in emerging healthcare companies. For more information visit JShieldsCapitalGroup.com.

“Beginning with my father, Thomas Shields Sr., we’ve created a unique corporate culture based on family values and service and we’ve earned a strong reputation because of it.” stated Tom.
