Over 1.4 million women face a higher risk of developing breast cancer over their lifetime because of several known risk factors, including having a genetic predisposition, a family history or a previous breast cancer diagnosis. Although monthly selfexaminations and yearly mammograms remain essential tools in detecting breast cancer, the American Cancer Society has recommended that these high-risk women add breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to their line of defense. Released in 2007, these guidelines suggest that including breast MRI with annual mammograms for high-risk women can help detect cancer earlier when it is most treatable.

Given its long history of providing innovative imaging technology to the local community, it should come as no surprise that Shields Healthcare Group has decided to offer breast MRI at its Brockton facility, under the leadership of newly appointed Medical Director of Breast Imaging, Alan Semine, M.D.
