Shields Health Care completes first total shoulder replacement in outpatient surgery center in Boston’s MetroWest

NATICK, Mass. Shields Health Care announced the completion of the first total shoulder replacement arthroplasty at an Ambulatory Surgery Center in Boston’s MetroWest – a historic milestone for the region. Dr. Arthur Christiano of Orthopedics New England successfully completed the procedure at New England Surgical Suites, making this location the first and only outpatient center to conduct total joint replacements in the area.

New England Surgical Suites was unveiled in September 2020 by Shields Health Care Group, Reliant Medical Group, Orthopedics New England, and New England Hand Associates. The center recently underwent a $10 million renovation of an existing office space. It is a state-of-the-art 13,000 square foot, freestanding facility featuring three operating rooms with brand-new equipment, cutting-edge technology for surgical precision, and specialized electronic medical records, enabling providers to rapidly share and analyze information.

A surgery of this caliber in a true ASC is a timely and important breakthrough, paving the way for more convenient and affordable joint replacement options for qualifying patients. Following the procedure, the patient was able to return to the comfort of their own home by the end of the day. In total, the process took fewer than 3 hours.

“ASCs are taking hold in Massachusetts,” said Dr. Christiano, “Having a total joint replacement in a true outpatient setting is definitely the way of the future for many healthy orthopedic patients. We are happy to be providing this convenient option to patients in Boston’s MetroWest region.”

New England Surgical Suites is located at 313 Speen St., near the Rte. 9 interchange across from the Natick Mall.
