Tufts Medical Center Inaugural Awards to Honor Health Care Leader and 12-year-old Mattapoisett Cancer Patient
Tufts Medical Center announced today that its annual Working Wonders benefit evening will feature two inaugural awards honoring two special people who exemplify the values of the Medical Center. The Working Wonders benefit evening will award the first-ever Ellen M. Zane Award for Visionary Leadership to Thomas F. Shields, who has served as a leader in the health care industry. The event will also present the inaugural Cam Neely Award for Courage to 12-year-old Nicholas Claudio of Mattapoisett, a cancer patient at Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center. The event will be held on March, 7, 2013 at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. Shields Health Care Group will be the presenting sponsor of the Working Wonders benefit evening.
“Tufts Medical Center is thrilled to honor two special individuals for these inaugural awards,” said Eric Beyer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Tufts Medical Center and Floating Hospital for Children. “Tom is a leader in the health care industry and has dedicated his life to promote the health of others. And Nick is truly an inspiration to all of us as he reminds us of how important it is to maintain a positive outlook on life and enjoy each day.”
A long-time healthcare entrepreneur, Mr. Shields has led the formation of more than 20 diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy centers all founded on the promise of delivering quality care to patients. For more than 30 years, he and his family have been investing in people-centered enterprises – medical, charitable, social service and recreational – that uphold the health of individuals and communities they serve. Additionally, his son and daughter, Thomas A. Shields, President of Shields Health Care Group, and Carmel Shields, Executive Vice President of Shields Health Care Group, are co-chairing the event in honor of their father’s recognition.
The Cam Neely Award for Courage is named for the NHL Hall of Famer, President of the Boston Bruins and Founder of The Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care. It honors individuals who courageously battle cancer or other serious diseases or caregivers who have selflessly provided comfort to those with such illnesses. The inaugural award is being given to Nicholas Claudio who is battling a rare brain cancer, choroid plexus papilloma. As a result of his illness, he has permanently lost his eyesight but has immersed himself in learning opportunities such as learning Braille in one year, learning to ski and holding the lead role in his school play. His positive outlook in the face of adversity and passion for living each day to the fullest embodies the spirit of the Cam Neely Award for Courage.
The theme of the 2013 Working Wonders benefit is “A Savory Celebration” featuring sampling of cuisine from guests chefs including Gordon Hamersely, Chef/Owner Hamersley’s Bistro, Tiffani Faison, Chef/Owner of Sweet Cheeks Q and a finalist on Bravo’s Top Chef, Brooke Vosika, Executive Chef at Four Seasons Hotel Boston, and Steve DiFillippo, CEO/owner of Davio’s Restaurants. The program also includes a live auction to support compassionate care, leading-edge research and Tufts Medical Center’s commitment to treat all of their patients as if they are a part of their family.
