Treating with eBx

Women with early stage breast cancer and gynecological cancers that fit certain criteria now have a new treatment option available to help reduce the chances of recurrence.

Shields Radiation Oncology Services now offer Axxent Electronic Brachytherapy at Winchester Hospital Radiation Oncology Center and Shields Radiation Oncology Center-Mansfield.

This is a treatment that uses a miniaturized x-ray source that can deliver targeted and effective radiation treatments under the supervision of a radiation oncologist. The new treatment requires fewer sessions than traditional radiation therapy resulting in better outcomes, less exposure to radiation and fewer side effects. The treatment also permits the healthcare provider to be at your side for treatment. For those patients concerned about missing work and previous commitments, electronic brachytherapy permits much shorter treatment time.

H. Joseph Barthold, MD, Medical Director of Shields Oncology Services stated “Imagine some of our patients with adult children living across the country not being able to leave jobs and responsibilities for six weeks of treatments for their loved ones. Knowing that the treatment for breast cancer can be completed in 5 days can substantially improve patients and their family’s ability to manage and plan treatment. Chances are greatly enhanced that patients will have the support needed for their treatment.”

Dr. Barthold added, “We have incorporated the Electronic Brachytherapy System into our oncology centers in order to provide a revolutionary radiation treatment alternative to our breast and gynecological cancer patients, more easily and conveniently”.
