Cape Cod Healthcare Shields open new cancer center in Falmouth

Cancer patients in Falmouth and surrounding towns often had to travel for up to an hour to get radiation treatments at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis or Jordan Hospital in Plymouth.

But now there’s another alternative to the long commute. Cape Cod Healthcare, the parent of Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital, and Quincy-based Shields Health Care Group have teamed up to open a new cancer center at the Falmouth Hospital campus.

The new cancer center, which opened on Feb. 22 after nearly nine months of construction, was made possible by a $10 million gift in 2008 from local philanthropists James and Ruth Clark. The gift marked the largest donation in Cape Cod Healthcare’s history.

“It’s really been an underserved area that we’ve identified for years, but it’s only with the magnitude of this gift that we’ve been able to bring this to fruition,” said Dr. Daniel Canaday, one of the radiation oncologists who works at Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital.
