UMass Memorial is proposing to build a $31 million, 40,000-square-foot center with nine operating rooms in an effort to shift less complicated procedures out of its Worcester medical center and into a cheaper setting. If approved, UMass Memorial officials believe the center could even boost new business.
The Shrewsbury project is moving forward under another joint venture, this time with Shields Health Care Group of Quincy. Shields already runs UMass Memorial centers where patients get X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging and other services.
“It’s a terrific project,” said Thomas A. Shields, president and chief executive of Shields, a family business. “I think it’s right where all the stakeholders in health care are asking us to move towards, which is value.”
