It could be said that the best business decision Tom Shields ever made was choosing his wife, Mary. When they married in 1958, she was just 24, but she already owned a small nursing home that she bought at auction with the help of her family. It was his first introduction to the business of health care.
Half a century later, Shields, at 78, continues to head his family business as CEO of Shields Health Care Group, which has grown to 750 employees across 23 free standing MRI centers. The company also runs a small number of radiation oncology sites. These days he spends a lot of time shuttling back and forth to Washington, D.C., lobbying hard to prevent further cuts to government reimbursement for MRI procedures. That effort comes against the backdrop of health overhaul bills that depend on cost-cutting.
