New Shields iPhone App

New Shields App offers mobile Shields Express Link capabilities.

Shields Health Care Group, New England’s largest network of independent MRI facilities, announced today the release of Shields Express Link Mobile, a free iPhone and iPad application. The new app will allow physicians referring to Shields to view patients’ appointment status, reporting information and images.

“We developed this application to meet an increasing market demand for medical iPhone apps from our referring audience,” said Patricia Whelan, Chief Technology Officer at Shields Health Care Group. “Shields is a company that is always at the forefront of both technology and service—this application gives our customers the latest technology to provide the very best care to their patients, anytime, anywhere.”

The new application was tested within a beta group that included several Shields-referring physicians from varying specialties, including orthopedics, neurosurgeons and neurologists. The group was most impressed by their immediate access to reports and images, which are made available as soon as the radiologist signs the report. They also appreciated the patient status feature, which gives an ongoing progress report of where their patient is in the scan process—from appointment time to check-in to dictation to when results are available. The application provides the ability to view not only their own patients’ scans but also patients within their practice, and the ability to review historical patients scans. The overall convenience and accessibility will help to accelerate the reporting process and consequently, the patient’s treatment. Future Shields Express Link Mobile releases will include the ability to order exams and consult with the reading radiologist via the FaceTime feature.

Shields President Tom Shields Jr. said, “We often scan patients who are in a lot of pain. When there is trauma involved, it’s critical that a diagnosis and treatment plan is in place as soon as possible. This latest technology advancement from Shields will help the process work faster and better for both the patient and their doctor.”

“We first introduced online results in 2002 with Shields Express Link (SEL), a technology that provides more than 15,000 physicians each year with access to images and reports online. The iPhone application takes this advanced technology and makes it mobile—something that the industry today demands,” said Ms. Whelan. “One of the physicians in our beta group said something that really hit home. He said, ‘I’d be more apt to work with a facility that had this technology than one that did not. It is making all the difference to me.’”
